Bye Bye to my First Crush

While driving toward the circle of death, aka the two mile course that I jog around, I received the news that Michael Jackson had died of an apparent heart attack. I can't say I'm sad, as I don't actually know Michael Jackson, but it did remind me of another time in my life.

The Thriller album was the first album I ever purchased (well, begged my Mom to buy for me). I remember opening the cover and finding Michael Jackson and a tiger. At that moment I developed my first celebrity crush. Michael Jackson was the cutest thing I'd ever seen and the fact that he could befriend a tiger only added to the intrigue.

In preparation for my imminent introduction and subsequent marriage to Michael Jackson, I learned every word to every song. I studied the videos and practiced all the dance moves, eventually perfecting the moon walk, a move I can still perform to this day. (Seriously, I did it at my wedding.)

Of course as time progressed, I forgot about my plans to marry Michael Jackson and moved on to bigger and better things. Michael Jackson moved on to plastic surgery, chimpanzees, surgical masks, spawning new generations of Jackson's and accusations of child molestation.

I'm not sure how future generations will look back on Michael Jackson. Will they refer to him as the King of Pop or a freakish man-child? Did we learn anything from his life? Hell, was there even anything to learn?

I learned that a young Microbiologist XX had a weak spot for cute black men and cats. I also found out that learning to moonwalk is kind of like riding a bike.

My first album was Macho Man by the Village People. Looking back on all those songs, I can't believe my parents let me buy it.

Honestly, I can't believe I bought it. WTF was I thinking?!?!

LMAO. I am pretty sure I owned the single Disco Duck. :) It is lyrically more tame, but infinitely worse.

You're hilarious. I loved Michael too, and although I never learned the moonwalk, I did own a red leather jacket and cut the fingers off my silver breakdancing gloves.

It's probably just as well you didn't get to marry him! The whole thing with Katie Holmes having had Tom Cruise posters on her bedroom wall when she was a girl kinda creeps me out...

I never did learn how to moonwalk, but not through lack of trying. I will admit to trying to remember how to do the spin in the kitchen while my kettle was boiling this morning though.

Just as I thought...
Dancing isn't healthy.

Dr. A - Thanks!! My younger self would have been so jealous of your red leather jacket and break-dancing gloves. I had neither, but i did have some rad parachute pants.

Cath - Almost everything about Tom Cruise gives me the creeps these days. After reading this comment, I too tried out my spin. It needs serious work. :)

TR - Not one for the dance?
