A few states away

I'm out of town this week attending the International Conference on Gram-positive Pathogens in Omaha, Nebraska. The conference started tonight with a dinner buffer and the first of four featured presentations. This talk was given by Olaf Schneewind, who also works on Gram-negative organisms.

This is the first conference I have attended all by myself and it's a little strange, a little intimidating and a lot boring. Of course, it's only the first night. I'm sure I'll meet some people and conditions will improve. It's probably for the best that I am here alone, my networking skills are getting a little rusty.

Although I am already missing my little family, I am totally looking forward to three nights of uninterrupted sleep.

Depending on the circumstances, I kind of like going to meetings alone. It really makes you branch out and meet new people.

ahh... Schneewind also does G+ bacteria. I referenced a lot in my master thesis ;)

I quite enjoy going alone to conferences, since it gives me opportunities to talk to all the (big) people myself - as the "lone representative from my lab". THat said, it's nice to be in a group too sometimes... but at least I tend to stay with the group then and not meet too many new people?!

I usually go alone nowadays and even for a social butterfly like myself this comment is true...

I've had quite a bit of fun at most conferences I've gone to by myself, but the last one I attended in August took a bit longer than normal to warm up to. Not sure if it was the pregnancy or what...

EGF - You're completely right and I need to get back into the networking groove.

chall - I'm not surprised you referenced Schneewind. It seems like that lab publishes a new paper every damn day.

TL - In normal situations I am quite the social butterfly myself, but not at conferences.

Micro Dr. O - I think part of the problem is that I haven't been to a conference in a long time and it's the first one I've attended in this new subfield. I feel kind of out of the loop.
